Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.

At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
