The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
