Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated net worth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
